Pep Guardiola was welcomed with a standing ovation by Barcelona supporters on Friday night when he attended the club’s EuroLeague basketball clash with Olympiacos at the Palau Blaugrana.

The Manchester City manager’s presence was announced to the arena during the second quarter, and the crowd responded with loud applause and cheers. Guardiola rose from his seat, smiled and raised a hand in thanks as the ovation continued.

The 55-year-old’s reception underlined the bond he still shares with Barcelona, more than a decade after he left the club’s football dugout.

A Bond That Has Not Faded

The night belonged to basketball, but for a few minutes the attention in the arena shifted to the man in the stands. Supporters who had come to watch the Catalan side take on the Greek champions stopped to honour a figure who shaped the most successful era in the club’s modern history.

Guardiola’s ties to Barcelona run deep. He played for the club before returning in 2008 to take charge of the first team, and his four years in charge, until 2012, produced 14 trophies. Among them were two UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga championships.

His teams were admired for possession football, sharp movement, technical quality and a relentless press, a blueprint that influenced coaches and clubs across the world.

The Messi, Xavi and Iniesta Years

That side was built around Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, players whose understanding of one another allowed Barcelona to dominate at home and compete with the best in Europe.

Talent alone did not explain the success. Guardiola built a system around positional awareness, quick passing, collective pressing and control of the ball, ideas that remain closely tied to his name. For many supporters, those years are still the standard by which the club measures itself, and the warmth in the Palau Blaugrana showed that the gratitude has endured.

Football’s Influence Beyond the Pitch

Guardiola’s appearance also showed the links between Barcelona’s football and basketball communities. He is known around the world for his work in football, yet the reaction from fans of another sport at the club showed how far his reputation extends.

Since leaving Barcelona, Guardiola has won further honours with Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Even so, his Catalan chapter remains central to his standing as one of the most influential coaches of his generation, and its principles still shape debate on tactics, player development and team organisation.

On Friday night, the Palau Blaugrana offered a simple reminder of that legacy: a packed arena on its feet for a former coach, in a sport that was not his own.
