France Fans Prepare Huge Welcome for Zidane as Stade de France Sells Out

There will be a familiar face on the touchline at the Stade de France on Friday night, but this time Zinedine Zidane will return in a role that is very different from the one that made him a national hero.

France supporters are preparing a special welcome for their new head coach ahead of the Nations League meeting with Italy, with a “WELCOME BACK, ZIZOU” banner among the fan displays planned for the occasion.

The stadium itself will be packed.

The France-Italy fixture has sold out, with around 80,000 supporters expected inside the Stade de France for Zidane’s first competitive home match since taking charge of Les Bleus. The early demand for tickets was one of the first signs of the excitement surrounding his appointment.

For French football, it promises to be more than an ordinary Nations League match.

It is a homecoming.

Zidane returns to a stadium that made history

Few places are more closely connected to Zidane’s international career than the Stade de France.

It was here, in 1998, that he became a symbol of French football. Zidane scored twice as France defeated Brazil 3-0 in the World Cup final, helping the country lift the trophy on home soil for the first time.

Almost three decades later, he will walk back onto the same pitch as the man responsible for guiding the next generation.

The change in perspective is significant.

As a player, Zidane was the creative force France relied upon in the biggest matches. Now, he must make decisions from the technical area, manage a squad filled with established stars and build a team capable of competing for major trophies.

That transition has already generated considerable interest among French supporters.

The beginning Zidane wanted

Zidane's first matches in charge have provided an encouraging start.

France opened their Nations League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Türkiye before producing another 1-0 win against Belgium.

Kylian Mbappé scored the decisive goal against Türkiye, while Michael Olise found the net late against Belgium.

Two matches, two victories and two clean sheets have given Zidane a solid platform as he begins his tenure.

The results have also given the new coach an opportunity to begin experimenting with his squad.

Zidane has already shown a willingness to rotate his players, giving opportunities to members of a younger generation while managing the workload of more established names.

That will be important as France attempt to build a squad capable of competing across a long international cycle.

Mbappé will not be there

One of the biggest talking points going into the Italy match is the absence of France captain Kylian Mbappé.

The Real Madrid forward suffered a knee injury during the victory over Türkiye and subsequently returned to his club for treatment.

His absence removes one of the most important attacking options from Zidane's squad and means other players will have to take greater responsibility in front of goal.

It also creates an interesting contrast.

Mbappé scored the winning goal in Zidane's first match as France coach. Now, the new manager must prepare for one of his biggest early tests without his captain and leading attacking figure.

Italy brings its own history

The choice of opponent adds another layer to Zidane's return.

Italy is not simply another opponent in Zidane's football history.

It was against Italy that his playing career ended in the 2006 World Cup final in Berlin.

The match remains remembered for Zidane's confrontation with Marco Materazzi, which resulted in the French captain being sent off during extra time. Italy eventually won the final on penalties.

Twenty years later, Italy will once again face Zidane.

The circumstances could hardly be more different.

There is no World Cup trophy at stake this time, and Zidane will not be wearing the France shirt. Instead, he will be standing on the touchline, responsible for preparing his team and managing the match.

A full stadium waiting for “Zizou”

The sold-out Stade de France should provide the backdrop for one of the most anticipated moments of Zidane's early tenure.

For many supporters, the emotional connection is obvious.

Zidane is not simply a former France international. He is one of the defining figures in the country's football history, a player whose image remains closely associated with France's greatest triumph on home soil.

The planned “WELCOME BACK, ZIZOU” banner captures that sentiment.

But once the match begins, the nostalgia will quickly be replaced by the demands of the job.

France supporters will expect a competitive team, and Zidane will be expected to make the decisions that can determine the result.

Zidane's next chapter begins at home

The Italy match offers Zidane an opportunity to experience something he has not had since taking the France job: a competitive home game in front of a full French crowd.

His first two victories have provided a positive foundation, but the new coach knows that his tenure will ultimately be judged over a much longer period.

There will be difficult nights, selection debates and pressure to deliver when major tournaments arrive.

For now, though, the focus is on Friday night.

When Zidane steps onto the Stade de France touchline, thousands of supporters will have a simple message waiting for him.

Welcome back, Zizou.

The man who once inspired France from the middle of the pitch will now try to lead the country from the sidelines.

And at a stadium where he has already created one of French football's greatest memories, a new chapter is about to begin.
