Mbappé joins Raúl in Champions League scoring history as Real Madrid beat Inter

Kylian Mbappé continued his impressive start to life at Real Madrid by reaching another major milestone in the UEFA Champions League.

The French striker scored as Real Madrid defeated Inter Milan 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, moving level with club legend Raúl on the competition's all-time scoring chart.

Mbappé opened the scoring in the 14th minute after Brahim Díaz won possession and picked him out. The forward made no mistake with the finish to put Madrid ahead.

The goal took Mbappé's Champions League tally to 71 in just 99 appearances, matching Raúl's total. The former Madrid captain needed 142 games to reach the same number.

Real Madrid did not have to wait long for a second goal.

Federico Valverde doubled the home side's advantage in the 23rd minute after Madrid's pressure forced Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez into a mistake. Valverde pounced on the loose ball and found the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Inter, however, refused to give up.

The Italian side created a number of chances and forced Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into some important saves. Madrid also had opportunities to put the game beyond doubt, but Inter goalkeeper Martínez kept his team in the contest.

Jude Bellingham came close to adding a third for the hosts, while Mbappé and Brahim Díaz also had chances.

Inter's persistence finally paid off in the 77th minute when Carlos Augusto pulled one back, giving the visitors hope of completing a comeback.

The final minutes were nervy for Real Madrid as Inter pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Madrid, though, managed to hold on and secure the victory.

For Mbappé, the night was another important step in his Champions League career.

With 71 goals, he is now level with Raúl in fifth place on the competition's all-time scoring list. Only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema have scored more.

Real Madrid will be pleased with the three points, although Carlo Ancelotti's side will know there is still room for improvement after allowing Inter to create several good chances.

For Mbappé, however, his latest goal provides another reminder of why he is already being mentioned among the Champions League's elite goalscorers.
