Passengers sitting on top of the cement bags were trapped, dying instantly after the vehicle overturned and fell into a ditch.
At least 12 people were injured while 18 others died in a road accident that occurred near Kwaita village on the Abuja-Lokoja expressway.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the accident occurred at about 3:16pm on Monday when a cement truck skidded off the road at high speed, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The FRSC Commander, Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Felix Theman, said some people sitting on top of the cement bags were trapped and died instantly after the vehicle overturned and fell into a ditch.
He said that FRSC operatives, together with the police and traffic officers, worked together to remove the cement before the bodies could be recovered.
Some of the survivors who were sitting on the concrete were trapped, but the FRSC, police and rescue workers removed the concrete and the bodies were recovered,” Theman said.
The commander said the rescue operation was carried out in coordination with the FRSC, the Motor Transport Department (MTD) and the Kwali Police Station in Abuja.
He also condoled the sudden demise of the deceased, condemning the practice of loading and unloading trailers and trucks, describing it as a reckless act that endangers lives.
He noted that loading and unloading is an offence under the Road Traffic Act, which regulates the handling of vehicles in the event of an accident.
Theman said that the FRSC would keep a record of such incidents and that anyone found guilty would be arrested.
